How do I verify my FAFSA information? ›

During verification, the college financial aid administrator will ask the applicant to supply copies of documentation, such as income tax returns, W-2 statements and 1099 forms, to verify the data that was submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Two-step verification, a form of multi-factor authentication (MFA), helps protect your StudentAid.gov account with an additional layer of protection from fraud. Each time you log in, you'll be asked to provide a one-time code that is delivered to you via email, text message, or an authenticator app.

The student's school may ask you to provide information after the FAFSA form is submitted. If you can't or don't provide this information to the school when asked, the student may not receive federal student aid.

Some people are selected for verification at random; and some schools verify all students' FAFSA forms. All you need to do is provide the documentation your school asks for—and be sure to do so by the school's deadline, or you won't be able to get federal student aid.

We highly encourage students and parents to create an FSA ID if you have not done so already. You can start this process at studentaid.gov. It takes one to three days for an FSA ID to go through the verification process, so we recommend getting it done now.

Ensure that the email address linked to your FSA ID is correct. Double-check for any typos or errors, and if necessary, update it in your FSA ID account settings.

You can also contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 to request a copy via U.S. mail (allow 10‒14 days for delivery).

Log in and update your information in your Account Settings. Once the Social Security Administration (SSA) verifies your account status, update the information on your FAFSA form by selecting “Make a Correction.” Once the information on your FAFSA form has been updated, navigate through the rest of the form.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, recognizing that the pandemic already created enough burdens for students, their families, and colleges, the Department chose to reduce the percentage of students selected for verification from 18% to 3-4%, targeting only cases of likely fraud.

You must contact Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243 prior to completing and submitting this form and providing documentation of identity. After calling FSAIC, you will receive an email from FSA with your case number and instructions.

After the student successfully submits their FAFSA form, they'll receive a “Confirmation” page with a confirmation number. The confirmation number is proof that the student successfully submitted their FAFSA form or correction. The student should print a copy of their “Confirmation” page for their records.
